Castle Lendva

Castle Lendva

The castle of Lendava was built in the Middle Ages on the side of Lendva Hill, a vineyard hill above the town of Muravidék, at the crossroads of the strategically important Zagreb-Körmend and Regede-Muraszombat-Kanizsa roads. The castle is one of the outstanding architectural and tourist attractions and cultural institutions of the city of Lendava.

Lendava Castle is already mentioned in charters from the 1100s. The castle, owned by the Bánffy and then the Esterházy family, has been significantly rebuilt several times. Opened in 1973, the museum presents the history of the area from the very beginning, with a special emphasis on the role of a bastion against the Turks. We can also get to know the ethnography of the Muravidék. A separate memorial room was set up for sculptor György Zala (1858–1937) and graphic artist István Gálics (1944–1997). The latter also housed the artist’s collection of butterflies and insects. A special feature is the mobile foundry, which presents the technique of traditional bronze casting. You can see several temporary exhibitions here every year. Cannons can be seen in the courtyard of the castle, and the museum offers unparalleled views of Lendava.
